Spring Equinox Energies

I’ve definitely had a slow start with my writing this calendar year.

What’s going on in this country has taken up a lot of my focus (more on that later). But lately, I realized that I also need to continue on with the things that are important to me.

Meaning, among other things, writing. I mentioned before that I would be starting on my isekai story, the one that is related to Daredevil Prince. I made some notes on the story, dragged my feet without recognizing why, and then got it. I’m too distracted right now to try my hand at my first isekai, my first fantasy, and all the genre research that the project would entail.

But I’ve missed writing - the experience of it. So I’m turning to the other book I had scheduled to write this year, which is Daredevil Prince: The Two Princes. M/M romance is the main kind of story that I write and the story and characters are still fresh in my mind. So the past few days, I’ve started on the outline, and the plot is filling in nicely. I’m getting excited to write it, while I suspect I was more nervous than excited to start in on I Woke Up in Another Life as a Hellraising Daredevil Prince of a Fairy Kingdom.

While isekai looks basic, I don’t think it actually is. It’s a genre that deserves respect and care in how one approaches it and I am not currently ready to do that, not with my attention being as divided as it is.

I should be able to get to it later this year, maybe in summer. I’ll definitely have it (and the Daredevil Prince sequel) ready in time for GayRomLit in October.

Lastly, on the current political crisis. It’s not my intention to turn this into a political blog, but if you’re in the U.S. like me, I hope that you recognize the danger we’re in. It’s not just the threat to libraries and our ability to read and write what we want, like I detailed in last month’s post. It has now gone far beyond that in areas such as the crippling and/or near-destruction of federal agencies, blatant disregard for individuals’ civil liberties, and even skirting the line of respecting the judiciary and its decisions.

So, while I may not talk about it much (or at all) here in this blog going forward, I am engaged in political action, and will continue to be until this crisis significantly abates or is otherwise resolved in such a way that the U.S. is once again a country under the rule of law. As Ben Meiselas said in a recent post in his Substack, this is “an unprecedented moment in history.” Please do your part, whatever you can, whether it’s giving $5 to the ACLU or volunteering or showing up at a rally. It’s not an exaggeration to say that at this moment in history, our democracy is at stake.
