What I’m Writing This Year, GayRomLit 2025, and a Trip Down Nostalgia Lane

First, Happy New Year! And to get right into it, here’s what I’m planning to write this year.

Daredevil Prince Universe

There will be a sequel novel to Daredevil Prince! It will be set in Los Angeles and of course the main characters will still be Jake Rowan and Shinsuke Shiratori.

And related to Daredevil Prince... is a whole new series, one that if you’ve read Daredevil Prince you might have seen coming.

It will be at least three volumes... and believe it or not, it’s actually family friendly (a first for me).

Daredevil Prince gets its name from the fictional Japanese anime series that Jake and Shinsuke star in as voice actors, namely, I Woke Up in Another Life as a Hellraising Daredevil Prince of a Fairy Kingdom. If you’re not familiar with isekai stories, they have absurdly long titles and feature main characters who wake up to find themselves in a different world.

In a big departure from my usual, I’ve decided to try my hand at isekai and write this story. It will be a series of light novels and I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve written either m/m romance or science fiction for years now, stories for adults, and this is something totally different for me.

And maybe I could stand a change. Whatever I write tends to be niche, even a niche within a niche, and so it’s not like I’ve been bound to any one genre or subgenre. Isekai might even come naturally to me as I’ve been an anime and manga fan for so many years.

So, look forward this year to more Daredevil Prince and Daredevil Prince-adjacent stories. And next is...

Science Fiction Short Stories

I think I mentioned last year that I’ve been writing short stories and submitting them to science fiction monthly magazines. That will continue in 2025. I’m also planning to go to a big science fiction convention later this year, which I’m really looking forward to.

And finally... I’m leaving room for other stories I might write, m/m romance and otherwise. I don’t want to hem myself in. ;-) One never knows where one’s imagination wants to go, after all.

GayRomLit 2025

I’ll be at GayRomLit this year as an author again, so I hope to see you all there! It’s Oct. 11-12 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The location brings back memories for me.

In my late twenties, I was involved with a group of slash ladies in the Los Angeles area. We’d get together on weekends and trade zines, read fan fiction, and watch episodes of The Professionals and Blakes 7 - all the things that women who were into the Kirk/Spock kind of thing would do back then.

A slash gathering was going to be held at a hotel in Scottsdale. So we all piled into somebody’s old car and started off across the desert.

When we got to the hotel, I found out what a real slash gathering was about. It was like one of our local weekend get-togethers but with many more women. It was a celebration of m/m, decades before m/m romance was a recognized subgenre of “regular” romance in the publishing industry.

I shared a room with three other women, one of whom was a zine creator. She went home with about $600 in cash from selling her zines - which was a lot of money in those days.

On the way home, the old car broke down about fifty miles east of Los Angeles. The car owner’s husband had to come rescue us, lol.

A few years after that, I drifted away from the slash community. I lost touch with the slash ladies. Because of the internet, having looked some of them up, I know that the car owner and the zine creator have since passed on.

And one day, I too will pass on, likely with no more insight as to why I’ve been into m/m stories my entire adult life as I have today. This interest has lasted through the decades in the forms of slash, yaoi/boy’s love, and m/m romance, and is still with me. Though I’ll be writing other stories this year beside m/m ones, the m/m ones will be there too. I can’t stay away. ;-)

Editing Again

Finally, after a few years off, I’m doing freelance editing again, currently for an indie romance publisher that publishes both m/f and m/m romance stories. I missed editing stories and wanted to get back into the trade.

I hope everyone is doing well. We are living in strange times, so please take care of yourselves and look out for one another. I’ll post again soon. Be well.
