The Best-Laid Plans...

As you might recall from my last post, I intended to get a lot done on Tales of the Queendoms in April.

I had my Camp Nanowrimo goal set up - 50,000 words - and looked forward to making progress on the book.

I took a trip out of town, then was home for a week before I got a late-season cold, or more likely - based on the symptoms - a sinus infection. It laid me low for a number of days. By the time I looked up, it was the third week of April.

So, despite my plans, I wound up doing very little on the book, lol. I’m surprised, but not (as you might expect) disappointed. I wasn’t really feeling the short stories the way I usually do before I get into writing a book.

For years, I’ve had a saying: follow the energy. By this I mean to do the creative work that calls to you in the moment, the work that you can feel the energy of most strongly. The corollary to “follow the energy” is “don’t force the energy.” If I feel one project calling to me more than the one I had planned, I don’t force myself to work on the planned project just because that was my plan. There’s a flow in creative endeavors that I’ve come to respect. You can’t dictate to it, you just have to go with it.

And right now I don’t have another project that is calling to me with any urgency.

So I’m taking a step back. I’m going to relax until I feel the energy move me in the direction of what to write next. I’ll update again before the end of the month.
